United By Blue Removed 266.5 Pounds of Trash from the Schuylkill River
On Tuesday, August 7th, the banks of the Schuylkill River were packed with an assortment of random trash items and over 60 fellow Philadelphia community members.
Our weird trash included set of plastic chicken and waffles accompanied with a real can of whipped cream, a farmer Ernie stuffed doll (he was sans Bert), the leg of a baby doll, a bucket of kitchen knives, toe separators for pedicures, and a breathing mask. We picked up an alarming amount of recyclables: 63 aluminum cans, 38 glass bottles, and 847 plastic bottles.
In addition to our regular Bartram’s volunteers and new friends, we were joined by representatives from BuildOn, Levi’s employees, Ikea South Philly employees, and B Lab members and fellow B Corporations- Recyclebank, Barber Gale Group, and One Village Coffee (along with their delicious iced coffee). B Corporations are a new kind of company which uses the power of business to solve social and environmental problems.
Our Bartram’s Garden season is starting to wind down, join us for the final two cleanups on September 4th and October 2nd!
