  • Sperry Top-Sider and UBB Removed 3,602 Pounds of Trash From Jamaica Bay

Location: Gateway National Recreation Area, Canarsie Pier Brooklyn NY | Date: April 14, 2012

Sperry Top-Sider just arrived in the Big Apple and its newest store can be found at 103 Fifth Avenue (between 17th and 18th Sts). In honor of their March housewarming party, Sperry Top-Sider and United By Blue hosted a cleanup of Canarsie Pier Beach in Brooklyn.

Every time we head to Brooklyn, we pick up a massive amount of trash. On the 14th, volunteers picked up 3,602 pounds of trash in just a few hours. During the first 10 minutes of the cleanup, our volunteers were able to pick up 1,067 pounds of litter during our trash regatta race. Our weirdest trash items included a doll head, a knife, a skateboard, a candlestick and glass holder, a large boat rope, a toy horse, a bike frame, a traffic cone and the bottom of a platform shoe.

It’s not quite warm enough for bikini season. But that doesn’t mean you can’t psych yourself up for beach weather with a good ol’ beach cleanup, complete with a free lunch and prizes. Hot damn!

Join Sperry Top-Sider and sustainable brand United By Blue in cleaning up Canarsie Pier Beach in Gateway National Recreation Area, Brooklyn. A mix of hard work and play, the cleanup ends in one-of-a-kind giveaways and prizes. Sperry Top-Sider and United By Blue will provide free breakfast and lunch, water, bug spray, sunscreen, bags, and gloves for volunteers. You just provide the hands.

So, let me get this straight: Exercise in spring weather, with an altruistic component, plus free breakfast and lunch, and prizes from two brands I love. Sounds like a plan.
