  • Intern Spotlight: Retail Marketing

Growing up, I became accustomed to the not so glamorous smell of the Delaware River and the fishing town of Fortescue, New Jersey. Thanks to my Dad, who first introduced me to the world of fishing and the great outdoors, it was here where my love affair with water began.  Some of my earliest memories are being out on the water fishing and crabbing with my family and our Australian Shepard, Fox.

Being near any body of water puts me in a place of relaxation. It’s my time to reflect, sit back, and soak in all its beauty.  As I’ve gotten older, I couldn’t help but notice the dramatic increase in pollution near oceans and waterways. Trips to the beach began to be not so relaxing as trash became a more prominent figure in the sand alongside seashells and hermit crabs. Cruising on the water has made me appreciate how beautiful our world is and the importance of protecting it soon became clear to me.

As I began my college career at Philadelphia University in the fall of 2011, landing an internship was always on my mind. By the time sophomore year rolled around, I knew it was time to start getting down to business. I participated in career fairs on campus, but had no luck so I decided to take matters into my own hands. On a regular basis, I began searching for internships on the web and I suddenly found myself on United By Blue’s (UBB) website. I checked out their internship page and decided to apply for a Retail Marketing position. After two interviews, I got the call and I had officially accepted my position as an intern!

UBB gave me the best of both worlds. I was able to pursue my love of fashion with my love of the water. As a sustainable apparel brand, UBB understands both the importance of being a profitable company and also a company that gives back to the environment. As part of the UBB mission, for every product sold, we remove one pound of trash from our world’s oceans and waterways through company-organized cleanups. As an intern, I have participated in three cleanups thus far and have made some of my favorite memories while doing so.

Cleanups are not only a great opportunity for UBB to interact with different communities and retailers, but it’s a chance for the employees to get out of the office and let loose. Judging by the pictures taken by our photography team, I’m definitely guilty of letting my free spirit show. There’s never a dull moment at a cleanup between the crazy trash I’ve stumbled upon or the moment when my trash bag ripped and I lead a trail of trash from the Delaware River back to the cleanup tent. Oops! Who knew picking up trash could be so much fun?!

Overall, I could not be happier or more grateful for the things I have learned so far from working at UBB. I’m treated more like an employee than an intern as I am currently working on projects that are only going to help this company grow even more. I have the opportunity to fuel my passion for retail design and marketing along with protecting our world’s oceans and waterways. What could be better than that?
