United By Blue Removed 855 Pounds of Trash from the Schuylkill River
Location: Bartram’s Garden Philadelphia PA
Date: March 06, 2012
Springtime in Philadelphia means the return of the Phillies, flowers blooming, birds chirping, and United By Blue coming out of its cleanup hibernation. It’s been a UBB tradition to kick off our cleanup season at our favorite cleanup location, Bartram’s Garden.
Bartram’s Garden is the oldest botanical garden in America and was built in 1731. In addition to being a popular spot for urban naturalists and history lovers, the banks of the Schuylkill River is a hotspot for Styrofoam pieces, plastic bottles, clothing, plastic bottles, plastic bottles, and peculiar weird trash items.
During our hour and a half cleanup, we picked up 855 pounds of trash including 552 plastic bottles, 32 glass bottles and 28 aluminum cans. Our weirdest trash included a plastic blue crab, a parking violation, monopoly money, a measuring tape dispenser, a tractor tire, and an empty gun case.
United By Blue would like to thank our hardworking volunteers who came out on the 6th. Our “Tuesdays at the River” cleanup series will take place on the first Tuesday of the month (April 3rd, May 1st, June 5th, July 3rd, August 7th, September 4th, and October 2nd).
UBB’s 3rd Annual Bartram’s Kickoff Cleanup for the 2012 Season
We had an amazing turnout, cleaned up over 800 pounds of trash, met new people, reunited with some known faces, and were interviewed by ABC. Not a bad day, if we do say so ourselves.
Keep your eyes out, more pics and a video will be posted this week.
